Last week, when I was at work, I logged onto and scheduled an appointment to have the internet installed at our house. We have gone this long without the internet, but now our oldest is in high school. She frequently gets reports and assignments that she has to use the internet to research information. Teachers e-mail students and parents now. Recently, when we had a meeting with her counselor about colleges and applications, she told us that all of the application materials are on-line now. The kids have to apply, pay application fees, and submit essays through the internet. They can even apply to lots of different colleges from one website. It is so much different than it was when I was in school. When we applied to colleges you had to send everything in that you typed on a type writer. You sent an actual check and had to wait for weeks, checking the mail everyday, to see if you got into your school of choice of not. The internet is making things so much easier today.

Exercise Rambling 101

October flew by fast and I somehow managed to stay away from the trick-or-treat candy, not to mention the few pounds that I dropped. It seems that I can only lose a pound a week, which is fine with me as long as I can keep those pounds from bouncing back through the upcoming holiday season.

Because of the economy, and just like most Americans, I’m somewhat on a budget, but with most of my Christmas shopping done early, I was hoping to buy a little program called Billy Blanks PT 24/7. The program has been available since early this year through Billy Blanks’ website, but it went retail in October at around $75-$90. Not as expensive as P90x or Insanity, but it can be pricey during a recession. I recently joined Ebay and I have been keeping a close eye on PT 24/7. I made a few bids, but the price always went up and up! I’m glad that I set a spending limit, as I bought the PT 24/7 yesterday through an Ebay store seller for just under $55. Its schedule to ship probably tomorrow, since today was Veterans Day with no mail service. The seller has sent me a tracking number for it.

Last week I received the book The Tae Bo Way by Billy Blanks which I bought on Ebay. The book is in excellent condition. I’ve only had a few minutes to glance through it, but I’m planning on reading it soon, as long with a few other cookbooks/health books, and posting a review on here.

A few weeks before, I bought a pair of 1-pound Everlast gloves from an Ebay seller, a day before I found Tae Bo Power with a set of weighted gloves. A few days later, I noticed my local Walmart had in a $10 pair of weight gloves. I’ve been looking for a pair for months and just when I ordered it Walmart actually gets something in. I received the Everlast gloves a week later and I’m glad that I got them. They are much better than the cheap-made Tae Bo gloves. The only downside is that if you have bigger hands than me, then you probably can’t wear them. They fit me just fine, but for others you might want to look for a different pair. I do recommend using weight gloves during Tae Bo or any other kicking boxing workout.

Review - The Seven Wonders That Will Change Your Life

The 7: Seven Wonders That Will Change Your LifeThe Seven Wonders That Will Change Your Life
BY: Glenn Beck and Keith Ablow, M.D.
PUBLISHED BY: Simon & Schuster, Inc.
ISBN: 978-1-4516-2551-6

Reviewed by Billy Burgess

The Seven Wonders That Will Change Your Life is part autobiography and part inspirational. Glenn Beck, the radio and television host, writes about how he has changed his life. At an early age his mother committed suicide, and he never recovered from it until years later. As an adult, he became addicted to cocaine and alcohol that lead to end of his first marriage. Glenn went though depression and suicide thoughts. When he found a little success in the radio world, he became a material person, a hateful person. After he met his later-to-be second wife, he went inside a church and became closer to God.

Each chapter of Glenn’s is followed by a chapter written by Dr. Keith Ablow. The doctor examines what Glenn has been through, and also shares some of his patients’ stories that are similar.

Unlike Glenn Beck’s other books, this one is not political, but is more spiritual. The authors list seven wonders that will change your life: Courage, Faith, Truth, Compassion, Friendship, Family, and Common Sense. After reading the book, I learned that both authors are very religious, and they believe that everyone has a purpose that God has given them. I enjoyed reading the book, and found it encouraging. Even if you’re not a fan of Glenn Beck, you should check this book.

Thanksgiving is Coming

Guest post from: Mohamed Simon

Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away and already, my family is all about it. My mom recently got satellite internet at home so she’s been emailing everyone relentlessly about what they’re bringing and who and it’s getting to be quite a long email chain. My aunts and uncles are of course going to fly in and it’s going to be a massive party like it always is. I love my family to death but they’re a lot to take so I think I’m going to have my new boyfriend spend the holiday with his family so as not to scare him off quite yet. He’s a great guy but he’s really softspoken so I’m afraid my loud family will totally blow his mind! Anyway, I’m in charge of the ham this year which means I’ve got the easiest dish – just call up the Honeybaked Ham Company and place an order, sounds doable to me! That’s my favorite dish anyway and hopefully I’ll get to take all the leftovers of it back to my house!

Review - Billy Blanks Tae Bo Power

Unplanned, and at the last minute, I hopped over to my local Walmart. For some odd reason I glanced at the fitness section and there staring back at me was Billy Blanks. Not the real one. LOL. He was on the front cover of what I thought was the new DVD, which actually it was a cardboard box containing the new Taebo Power DVD and a pair of adjustable weighted gloves. I had to laugh and inspected the box as I had just ordered a pair of Everlast weighted gloves from an Ebay seller the night before. I glanced at the price and it was under $17 which wasn't bad considering that one exercise DVD cost at least $9, but this had the gloves. I was already aware that Tae Bo Power was being released, along with Cardio Explosion, on December 6. I'm not for sure if Walmart released this DVD early, or if the DVD/Glove set came out recently. It doesn't matter as I now have a new workout.

Since I had skipped my workout that morning because I had take care of a few errands, I waited until late in the evening to pop the DVD into the player. For newcomers to Tae Bo, you'll be disappointed that there is no   instructional workout. Normally, Billy Blanks takes fifteen minutes to explain the new moves. The main workout is longer than the other releases this year, this one rounding about 61 minutes counting the warm up and cool down. If your looking for a great cardio workout, you'll won't find it here. Power focus on mostly the upper body with a few kicks here and there. The weighted gloves does a make a difference, but you can don't have to use them. You can use handheld weights or none at all and you'll still feel the burn. The last fifteen minutes is a killer! There is a bonus workout called Billy's Power Abs! It is the short program around 10 minutes long, and involves sitting in a chair for the routines. I found this to be challenging as I don't have a sturdy metal chair like Billy and the gang does.

Now, let's talk about the weighted gloves. I have never owned a pair before, and I've been searching for a pair since I started Tae Bo earlier in the year. Like I said above, I just ordered a pair the night before, which I, now, thought would be backups. I would say that they're no more than a pound each. The gloves fit perfectly, but they might be too big for someone with smaller hands. After I finished the workout and took off the gloves, I noticed that the black material had rubbed off onto my skin. This happened in my next two workouts and now I haven't had any problems. I received the Everlast gloves today in the mail. I haven't had a chance to test them out yet, so I won't be comparing the Tae Bo glove to them just yet.

Overall, I must say Tae Bo is a fun workout that is meant to tone your upper body, and you will be sore the next day. There is a lot of punching throughout the workout, so be expected to be covered with sweat by the end of the DVD.

Catching a Broadway show on the big screen

Guest post written by Alisha Henderson

I've seen a few Broadway shows in my life and I absolutely loved them. I'd say it would be pretty hard to not enjoy a Broadway show. But, I'm not one of those people that can just afford to pick up and leave for a weekend to see a whole bunch of shows. Although I would love to be able to do that. So I like to seek out alternatives like local musicals, national tours of Broadway shows and movie versions of Broadway shows. I recently heard that they actually filmed a live performance of the show Memphis and released it in theaters. But now it's out on DVDs and I'm going to watch it.

While I was online looking for some info about tracking down a copy of this, since they closed down all of our local video and DVD stores. As I was looking online for that info, I saw some info on miracle ear and decided to get fitted with some hearing aids.

I found a copy of it and was glad to have the hearing aids. I think they helped me experience the play that much more!

Health and exercise is a growing topic in our news/media culture, with the countless weight-loss television shows and celebrities' nip/tuck updates. CoolSculpting was invented to help healthy men and women, who have lost weight and are now healthy, get rid of those stubborn extra pounds, otherwise known as your love handles or muffin tops. There is not enough dieting or exercise to help you shrink down these areas. Some people give up or others have costly surgery with suctions, needles and even lasers. Harvard scientists developed CoolSculpting. It is FDA cleared and clinically proved to help banish those unwanted pounds by freezing the fast cells without ever damaging your skin.

After just one visit, you can see up to 20% reduction in the treated area. If necessary, you can have more treatments, which means more fat lose in those areas. Within months, the fat cells in the treated areas will be gone.

I recall hearing about CoolSculpting on an episode of the Rachel Ray show several months back, so I was eager to do this sponsored review/post. I must say that I enjoyed visiting the website, which is clean and easy to navigate. There are several success stories and patient FAQs. It was nice to see that CoolSculpting has a Facebook page for everyone to visit and like. Be sure to check out and enter the CoolSculpting 12 Weeks to Change Challenge.

Book Review - Eat All Day - Drink All Day

There are countless diet plans and how to diet books out there today. Eat All Day - Drink All Day is by a F.F. (Former Fatty) D.G. Long who uses the simple fact that it is way easier to burn off 100 calories than 500 calories or more three times a day. She doesn’t go to the gym, but goes by the 10,000 steps a day method; therefore the average person can easily understand and follow the diet plan that is introduced in the book.

Have you ever heard the phrase “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day?” Well, you should never skip breakfast and it should always be eaten within an hour of rising from bed.

The only equipment you need for this diet plan are the following: a liquid measuring cup; a set dry measuring cups; a set of measuring spoons; a blender; a small non-stick skillet; and a little kitchen scale.

There are drinks, salads, soups, sandwiches, fish, beef, eggs, chicken, snacks, and many other meal recipes including 100 calories recipes.

Eat All Day - Drink All Day follows a simple plan of eating small nutritional meals throughout the day. In the back of the book the author has provided a three day meal plan that includes 8 small meals a day. Each day is under 770 calories total. You don’t have to be a chef to try out the meals in the book. All of the recipes look easy enough for anyone to make. There’s even a cheese sandwich recipe that is only 100 calories. Some of my favorites are Mocha Mama, Coffee Creamy, and Good for You Cocoa. I enjoyed reading the book and recommend it to everyone.

Let’s face it; the economy is not getting any better. The food cost and household items are getting more expensive every week. People are looking for ways to save money. The Complete Guide to Creating Oils, Soaps, Creams, and Herbal Gels for Your Mind and Body contains over 101 natural body care recipes that you can make at home.

The book gives a brief history of aromatherapy, an overview of essential oils and how to handle the oils. There is a long list of common carriers and base oils, like - cranberry seed oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, and many others. Then you learn about the common essential oils, like - balsam of Peru, cedarwood, lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, and etc. You learn about the 30 uncommon essentials oils and what oils to avoid. From there you’ll get a brief 101 on soap making. The recipes range from household cleaners, to bathroom soaps and shampoos, beauty and wellness treatments, and other oils.

Wow! I didn’t know there were so many different kinds of oils! I like the concept of making soaps and cleaners at home, but I wonder if some of these ingredients can be found outside of big cities, like - geranium oil, apricot kernel oil, and many others. The book also includes simple home remedies, backache blend, cold and flu blend, and my favorite - cold sore blend, but I have no idea where to find tea tree oil or geranium oil. The recipes look simple if you can find the ingredients. I enjoyed reading about the different oils.

Why I Love the MTV Music Awards

This guest post from Walter Horn

My favorite awards show is the MTV Music Awards. I look forward to this ceremony every year. I think it is the liveliest of the awards show on television. I wish that MTV had it during the January or February season, so we do not have to wait until August or September. After all, the award shows play earlier in the year.

I enjoy seeing what the bands and artists are going to wear. It is not your typical formal affair. These artists go all out for the MTV Music Awards. It is truly entertaining to see what they are going to wear on stage or on the red carpet.

The hosts change every year for the MTV Music Awards. Unfortunately, I did not like Russell Brand or Chelsea Handler as hosts. I am not sure who I would like to host this year's MTV Music Awards. Possibly Jimmy Fallon since he is funny. It would be great to see Carson Daly back on MTV even though he is not funny.

It will be interesting to see what will go down on my favorite awards show this year. Will Britney Spears perform? What will Lady Gaga wear? Will Kesha win awards? I will definitely have to tune in to see my favorite performers and bands. I will make sure to watch my favorite awards show on

    Exercise & Ramblings 101

After two weeks of ignoring the scales, I am thinking of weighing again on Wednesday. I know I have probably ganined a few pounds, but maybe not because jeans are getting bigger on me. Over the last week I have ate too many 'sweets' and I need to stop that little habit. I've been ill with a sore throat, so there have been days I skipped my workout. As I am writing this, I have not done a Tae Bo workout, but I plan on doing one later after eat, probably a salad. I was planning on having a workout finished early in the morning, but I watched the new True Blood episode from last night which I recored on a VCR. Yes, I'm probably the only person who still uses a VCR.

For the readers who don't know me, I am a Tae Bo fan. After searching the web the other night for fitness equipment, I found out that there are two new Tae Bo workouts coming out in early September, Tae Bo Ripped Extreme and Billy's Bootcamp Sweat Off the Sizes. My birthday is in September, so maybe somebody will get me a gift! If not, I'm planning on buying the DVDs myself.

The Diet Joke is meant to be a reprogramming guide to help you jump start pass the culture nonsense and help you get starting on changing your life for the better, which isn’t easy since we are constantly bombarded with messages/commercials about new food products. We have to learn that these companies are here to make money and that they don’t care about out health. We have to be smart and not let the advertisers brainwash us into buying the products we don’t need. Even our own government wants to control our health, but we are the only one’s with the power to do something.

I was interested in reviewing The Diet Joke because I have been dieting and exercising for the last few months. I found the book to a bit of fresh air from the constant dieting and fitness books that are being released through the media. Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Diet Joke and recommend it to everyone.
